In a statement, People Before Profit TD, Bríd Smith has said that reports of a committee being set up to look at the findings of the Citizen’s Assembly on the issue of the 8th Amendment is yet another delay and stalling tactic.

Ms Smith said, “I am getting really annoyed now at yet more and more delays by this government in setting up a special committee to look at the findings of the Citizen’s Assembly. This is a total betrayal of women all across this country.

“I, like many others, have suspected that the Citizen’s Assembly is nothing more than a stalling tactic, set up by Fine Gael, in order to delay for as long as possible repeal of the 8th Amendment. The setting up of this committee confirms that in my eyes.

“I am now urging people to get out and support the Strike for Repeal on International Women’s Day on the 8th March and the Repeal the 8thdemonstration on the same day to show our total and utter disgust at this disgraceful delay.

“The establishment in this country cannot hold off women’s equality anymore. Women cannot and will not wait any longer. We must repeal the 8th now and give women the right to choose.”
