Who Is Martin O'Sullivan

I am a thirty three year old computer industry worker, living in Edenmore. As an active socialist, I do not make empty promises – I have a proven track record of promoting ‘people power’ to bring change.

  • I organized weekly protests outside the office of the Minister Sean Haughey over the budget and the cutbacks in education.
  • I actively supported the Stardust families in their campaign for justice by supporting their picket at the Butterly Business Park, when, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the fire, an attempt was made to open a pub on the site.
  • In 2005, I led a campaign to force Dublin City Council to switch back on the audible crossing signals that blind and vision-impaired people use to safely cross the street.
  • I was one of the main organizers of the No to Lisbon campaign in this constituency.
  • Since 2003 I have campaigned against the illegal war in Iraq and the use of Shannon as a military stopover. This war has made the world a more dangerous place.

With Martin O Sullivan, you get a doer – not a talker.

My Policy Priorities

1) A public Works Programme: I will press Dublin City Council to set this up to provide jobs for workers made redundant by the collapse of the economy.

Projects for a public works programme should include:

  • A fully integrated rail and transport network (this would help to reduce carbon emissions).
  • A housing insulation programme to reduce energy usage.
  • The provision of publicly owned crèches which would be paid for through taxation.
  • A network of primary health care centres with developed preventative medicine systems, thus reducing reliance on hospitals.

2) No Water Charges: The political establishment will try to bring in water charges once the local elections are out of the way. I helped organise the fight against bin charges in this constituency – and, if elected, will lead an active fight to resist water charges.

3) Allotments: I will push for an order to be made by Dublin City Council to allocate space on waste ground for allotments where people can grow their own vegetables.

4) Expose the waste spending by the council bureaucrats. Dublin City Council has spent more than  €200 million on consultants since 2004. That is more than they spent on the fire service! I will scrutinise council spending and vote AGAINST any money for spin doctors or corporate advisors.

5) Support Taxi Drivers for Change in their demand that Dublin gets a proper regulated taxi service.

6) Ensure that all public buildings are fully accessible to the disabled and the elderly and that new housing is built as accessible as possible.

7) Fully support the Stardust Families: The independent enquiry by Paul Coffey concluded that there is no evidence to support the key finding of the original tribunal, “that the fire was started deliberately.” This vindicates the families’ ongoing campaign for justice and truth, which I will continue to support and assist.
