Anti War Movement to demonstrate at the British Embassy, Friday 29th February as Blair gives evidence on Iraq

IAWM ALSO CONDEMNS BROWN'S INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AS ATTEMPT TO RE-BRAND IMMORAL AGHAN WAR

The Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM) will hold a demonstration this Friday January 29th at 5pm outside the British Embassy in Ballsbridge, Dublin. The protest has been organised to coincide with the appearance of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair before the Chilcott inquiry, where he will answer questions about his role in launching the war on Iraq in 2003.

The protest will coincide with a series of protests taking place in Britain at the Chilcott inquiry and on the previous day (Thursday 28th) at the international conference on Afghanistan, hosted by current British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

The IAWM, like its British counter-part, the Stop the War Coalition, believe any serious inquiry into Mr Blair's role in the Iraq war could only conclude that he told multiple and deliberate lies to justify an aggressive and illegal war.

Similarly, the British and Irish anti-war movements believe that the international conference on Afghanistan being hosted by Gordon Brown, the day before Mr Blair's appearance at the inquiry, is a cynical attempt to re-brand the hugely unpopular war in Afghanistan as the "good war," when it is one equally as immoral as that fought in Iraq.

The Kerry Public Service Workers Alliance (KPSWA) is holding a protest outside the clinic of Fianna Fail TD Tom McEllistrim, on Saturday 6th February at 11am.

Venue situated at the back of the Horan Centre, Tralee.

In the words of the local TUI, " bring as many colleagues as you can along with you. It is crucial that action of this kind begin to happen all over the country so that the appearance of quiet due to the Christmas break and the bad weather is transformed and the politicians are jolted out of any false sense of security into which they may have been lulled. It is equally important that we demonstrate to the leadership of the trade union movement that there is no way we are ever going to accept and lie down under what has been done to us".

Water charges on the way?

Fianna Fáil and the Greens now seem determined to make another attempt at forcing domestic users to pay on the double for our water.

The Green Party leader, John Gormley, is leading the charge. He said recently that it would cost around €1bn to upgrade the water network and that the Government intended to raise the money from domestic users, leaving householders paying hundreds of euro a year in addition to the tax we already pay for public services.

Gormley wants to introduce a water metering system with charges applying to any water used above a free allocation. It is claimed that only when users have to pay for water will they realise the value of it and stop wasting it. Gormley took full advantage of the water shortages during the ‘big freeze’ in January to ‘prove’ this point. If people had been paying for water, they wouldn’t have left their taps running.

But the facts tell a different story. Years of under-investment mean that up to 50 per cent of water in some areas is lost through leaking pipes. The antiquated pipes made them particularly prone to bursting during the big freeze. Instead of trying to introduce a water metering system that would be expensive to install and costly to administer, the Government should invest in upgrading the network and encourage water conservation measures.
