Discussion: The crisis and the response of the Left in Germany

11am, Teachers' Club. Saturday, May 29.

The current economic and financial crisis is Europe-wide, albeit particularly severe in Greece and Ireland. It is clear that Europe-wide solutions, including Europe-wide responses by the Left and the labour movement, are needed. Bärbel Lange and Sandra Beyer , both long-time members of Die Linke, will lead a discussion on the political situation in Germany and the response of Die Linke to the crisis.

Die Linke, which has about 76,000 members and rising, took 12% of the vote in the 2009 federal elections and in Europe has eight MEPs.

SOS (Save our Swimming Pool) is a group of concerned residents who oppose the closure of Swimming Pools, in Dublin.  Dublin City Council unveiled plans to close North side Swimming Pool on 1st January 2010 but following local and political pressure the planned closure was deferred until June 2010.  Following further protests, and political pressure, the closure of this pool has been deferred until November.

More people would use the pool if Public hours were increased and the City Council showed some interest in promoting the pool.

There is scope for adding additional services such as:

    * mother & Toddler Swimming
    * public swimming classes for adults and children,
    * birthday parties at the pool,
    * water aerobics, Easter & Summer Camps

Dublin is European Capital of Sport for 2010 and we celebrate by closing down swimming pools? Something is not right. We NEED your support to fight this unjust closure, if we wait until November, it will be too late.    Please attend the meeting on Wednesday June 9th In St Joseph's National School Macroom Rd, Coolock, Dublin 17 8pm

Europe Wide Protest Poster

  Across Europe, working people are being hammered with hundreds of billions of euros of cutbacks. The result is a slashing of living standards, deteriorating public services, lower wages and over 23 million unemployed in the eurozone. To help build a unified fight back across Europe the Socialist Party together with other left groups in Ireland have endorsed the European Wide week of action initiated by Joe Higgins MEP and 15 other left wing MEPs. Here we post the text of the joint leaflet.

These protests are a vital opportunity to stand together across Europe and oppose these attacks - make sure you are at the Central Bank Plaza on Dame Street in Dublin on Saturday 26 June!

Ireland has become a model for attacks, with other countries encouraged to follow the example of the Irish government by the EU Commission and the IMF. We know what this model means:
