SOS (Save our Swimming Pool) is a group of concerned residents who oppose the closure of Swimming Pools, in Dublin.  Dublin City Council unveiled plans to close North side Swimming Pool on 1st January 2010 but following local and political pressure the planned closure was deferred until June 2010.  Following further protests, and political pressure, the closure of this pool has been deferred until November.

More people would use the pool if Public hours were increased and the City Council showed some interest in promoting the pool.

There is scope for adding additional services such as:

    * mother & Toddler Swimming
    * public swimming classes for adults and children,
    * birthday parties at the pool,
    * water aerobics, Easter & Summer Camps

Dublin is European Capital of Sport for 2010 and we celebrate by closing down swimming pools? Something is not right. We NEED your support to fight this unjust closure, if we wait until November, it will be too late.    Please attend the meeting on Wednesday June 9th In St Joseph's National School Macroom Rd, Coolock, Dublin 17 8pm

Europe Wide Protest Poster

  Across Europe, working people are being hammered with hundreds of billions of euros of cutbacks. The result is a slashing of living standards, deteriorating public services, lower wages and over 23 million unemployed in the eurozone. To help build a unified fight back across Europe the Socialist Party together with other left groups in Ireland have endorsed the European Wide week of action initiated by Joe Higgins MEP and 15 other left wing MEPs. Here we post the text of the joint leaflet.

These protests are a vital opportunity to stand together across Europe and oppose these attacks - make sure you are at the Central Bank Plaza on Dame Street in Dublin on Saturday 26 June!

Ireland has become a model for attacks, with other countries encouraged to follow the example of the Irish government by the EU Commission and the IMF. We know what this model means:

Wednesday, July 7, 2010
Start: 12:00 pm

Inclusion Ireland is coordinating a national protest march from Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin1 to Leinster House on Wednesday 7th July at 12pm, to protest against cuts affecting people with disabilities. All are welcome

What: National Protest March against cuts to people with a disability

Where: Meet at the Garden of Remembrance, marching down O’Connell Street, before assembling outside Leinster House at Molesworth St.
Who: People with a disability, their families and anyone interested in protecting the rights of people with a disability

The Disability Strategy has been dismantled and people with disabilities have faced cuts to services they receive, education supports and social welfare and this march will tell Government that enough is enough; people cannot take any further cuts. This message will go out loud and clear at the gates of Leinster House on 7th July.

Disability Strategy:

The Disability Strategy as laid out in 2004 has been decimated:

  • July 2008 - Personal Advocacy Service as laid out in the Citizens Information Bill, deferred indefinitely;
  • October 2008 – complete rollout of the Education for Persons with Special Educational Needs Act, deferred indefinitely.
  • October 2008 – full rollout of the Disability Act, deferred indefinitely,

Services:

People with disabilities and their families have been presented with cutbacks to all services they receive over the past year, such as day and residential services, and in particular to respite services (short breaks), and have had no say in what was cutback. These services are not a luxury.
