Student Nurses Subjected to Slave Labour

Annette Mooney, the People Before Profit/ United Left Alliance candidate for Dublin South East has condemned as slave labour, plans to cut and eventually abolish payments to fourth year student nurses.
"It is disgraceful that student nurses will be forced to work on the wards for nothing. If the government wants to save money they should start with ending the bank bailout or by cutting the salaries of HSE executives instead of picking on vulnerable students and frontline services".
"These cuts will just place a massive financial burden on the students and their families and will force many from lower-income backgrounds out of their courses".
The former community nurse said that reforming the health service and supporting workers resistance will figure prominently in her election campaign.
"It has fallen down the agenda in this election, due to the massive economic problems but I feel strongly that we must commit to creating an efficient national health service and end the two tier system. I will be standing with student nurses in their attempts to defend their rights."
There are protests planned at hospitals across the country and a major march from Dublin's parnell square at 11.30am on Wednesday the 16th of February

First step to defusing the ticking mortgage time-bomb is to stop bailing out the banks with home-owners’ money

The first step to defusing the ticking mortgage time-bomb is to stop bailing out the banks with home-owners’ money, says People Before Profit candidate for Dublin South East Annette Mooney.
Annette Mooney, who is standing in Dublin South East as part of the United Left Alliance today criticised Fine Gael’s pledge to hand €166 a month to 250,000 home owners struggling with negative equity, while still bailing out the banks.
“Almost 40,000 people have not been able to pay their mortgages for six months or more now. Hundreds of repossession cases are being heard by the courts every week. UCD economist Morgan Kelly recently said the mortgage crisis put Ireland ‘on the cusp of a social conflict on the scale of the Land War’.”
It is not enough to just ease the burden on struggling home owners. To do so while still handing the taxes paid by the same struggling home-owners to the same banks is ludicrous and fundamentally unjust,” said Annette.
“We in PBP and the ULA have a better solution, the basis of which would be to first stop pouring money into the black-hole that is the banks. It is time to stop and to recognise how these families were bullied by an elite of property developers, banks, solicitors and other vested interests into jumping on the property ladder or risk being left out.”

The people need a new direction, not a new FF leader

A new leader of Fianna Fáil will make no difference to the country. The people need a new direction, not a new FF leader, says United Left Alliance candidate, Annette Mooney

Dublin South East election candidate, Annette Mooney, of People Before Profit, says a change of leader for Fianna Fail will mean nothing to the people of the country.

“After hearing Micheal Martin on the radio this morning, where he said he agreed with the policy direction in which Brian Cowen has led this country, it is clear more than ever that what the country needs is a radical shift in direction not just a new leader of Fianna Fáil.”

Minister Martin said the only problem with Cowen’s leadership was that he had communicated the party message badly.

“He was saying the message itself was not at fault. Well the message we have for him is that we have huge problems with the Fianna Fáil policies that have driven this country into the ground, and destroyed the hopes and plans of thousands of its citizens.

“Whoever any new leader is will make no real difference. No matter what happens at tonight’s Fianna Fáil meeting it will be FF business as usual - tomorrow and the next day and the next day until we get a change of Government.”

Special screening of ‘The Pipe’

Communities fighting back

Special screening of ‘The Pipe’ followed by panel discussion
2pm, Saturday 5th of February
New Theatre, 43 East Essex Street, Temple Bar

From Rossport to Ringsend, communities all over Ireland are standing up for their rights and this special screening of ‘The Pipe’ creates a unique forum to connect various community struggles. The Pipe is a story of a community tragically divided over the Corrib gas project, and how they deal with a pipe that could bring economic prosperity or destruction of a way of life shared for generations. The screening is followed by panel discussion which focuses on the film, the community’s struggle in Mayo and communities in Dublin who are also fighting back.
Chaired by Annette Mooney, People Before Profit/United Left Alliance candidate for the Dublin South East constituency, the panel will comprise Risteard Ó Domhnaill (Director of ‘The Pipe’), representatives from different community groups (including the Anti-Incinerator and Anti-bus cuts campaigns), researchers and activists engaged in issues related to Irish gas and oil.

The people don't want Brian Cowen

Call a general election now says Annette Mooney, People Before Profit

The Taoiseach, Brain Cowen, should step down immediately and call a general election, says People Before Profit candidate in Dublin South East, Annette Mooney.

“It is clear to anyone now that not only do the people not want Brian Cowen as their leader, his own party members don’t want him,” said Annette, who is standing as part of the United Left Alliance.

“Cowen is hanging on like a gasping, dying animal and he should put his party and the country out of their misery and succumb to the inevitable. This consultation process with his party that he’s now insisting is a pathetic attempt to buy time for Fianna Fail and their discredited policies. The people don’t want any of them.”

Annette is calling on Cowen to finally show some leadership the people can respect, and step down. Call an election now.
